Presidents Cup: The Players

The US Team

Dustin Johnson

Johnson is the number 1 player in the world. He has won 5 Golf Championships and won his first major last year at the US Open. He is married to Wayne Gretzky’s daughter, Paulina, and they have two children together. Johnson is known for having one of the longest drives in the game. He is a power player. He has also had some off the course issues with drugs leading to a suspension in 2014. He is from South Carolina and is 33 years old.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth is the name in American golf right now. He had a historic year in 2015 when he won 3 of the Majors and finished 2nd in the other. This year he won the British Open and though he’s number 2 in the world, everybody should be afraid of him. His personal life is as easy to cheer for as his professional demeanor. He has a sister with developmental delays that he and his whole family talk about warmly. From Dallas, Texas he has taken the golf world by storm and is fun to watch at any tournament.

Justin Thomas

Thomas is the same age as Spieth and they have played together since they were kids. At 24, Thomas won his first major this year, the PGA Championship, as well as winning the FedEx Cup. He is another of the young talent on the American side who is playing in his first President’s Cup this year.

Rickie Fowler

Fowler now seems like a veteran with so many younger players, but he is only 28. He has yet to win a Major in his career, but the amount of times he’s been close leads everybody to believe his time will come. He’s 8th in the world currently but has been as high as 4. Fowler is a California kid who’s known for his orange on orange attire he wears every Sunday in honor of his alma mater- Oklahoma State University.

Phil Mickelson

Mickelson is the wily veteran of the team. This is his 12th President’s Cup and as a Captains Pick has always performed well in these match play events. He is coming off of a poor year personally. But he’s always a tough out for the opponent.

The Rest of the American Team:

Brooks Koepka is 11th in the World in his 1st Presidents Cup.

Matt Kuchar is 12th in the World in his 4th Presidents Cup.

Daniel Berger is 25th in the World in his 1st Presidents Cup

Kevin Kisner is 24th in the World in his 1st Presidents Cup

Patrick Reed is 20th in the World in his 2nd Presidents Cup

Charley Hoffman is 23rd in the World in his 1st Presidents Cup.

The American’s are the favorites with everyone ranking within the top 30 in the World. They have a lot of inexperience, but the talent should make up for it.

The World Team

Hideki Matsuyama

Matsuyama is 3rd in the World and has been so close multiple times for a Major win. He has the talent and ability to break out, and he should be able to make some noise in this tournament.

The Australians

Jason Day (7), Adam Scott (22), and Marc Leishman (16) make up the bulk of the International’s power. Both Day and Scott have won Majors and been the World Number 1.

The South Africans

Louis Oosthuizen (21), Charl Schwartzel (27), and Brandon Grace (42) are all quality players that should bring a good showing to their matches.

The Depth

It’s the International’s depth that will give them problems. Si Woo Kim of South Korea is 39th in the World. Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela is 38th. Adam Hadwin is 47th from Canada. Emiliano Grillo of Argentina is 60th and Anirban Lahiri of India is 68th. These guys will have to play their best golf to beat the US team.
